Whoever the NPP chooses will suffer a crushing loss in 2028 — Berekum West MP

Dickson Kyere-Duah, the Member of Parliament for Berekum West representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is headed for a decisive defeat in the 2028 general elections, regardless of the individual it selects as its presidential flagbearer.

Appearing on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, January 30, Mr Kyere-Duah expressed strong confidence in the NDC’s electoral prospects, stressing that the party is not concerned about the outcome of the NPP’s internal race.

According to him, as long as the NDC maintains the direction it has taken over the past year, any candidate presented by the governing party will be overwhelmingly rejected by voters.

“Our focus is not on who the NPP elects. Whoever emerges will be defeated convincingly in 2028 if we continue on our current path,” he said.

The MP explained that the opposition party is concentrating on building on its achievements and expanding its support base rather than monitoring the ruling party’s primaries.

He also cast doubt on the accuracy of opinion polls in forecasting results of delegate-based elections, describing such processes as unpredictable.

While acknowledging the importance of data and research, Mr Kyere-Duah noted that internal party elections often defy polling expectations.

He pointed to past NPP congresses as examples, recalling how Sir John lost the General Secretary position in 2014 despite strong projections in his favour, and how John Boadu similarly fell short in 2022 even though polls had tipped him to win.

According to him, delegate elections are shaped by hidden dynamics, as many voters are unwilling to disclose their true preferences.

He added that unexpected developments at the last minute can dramatically change outcomes, sometimes overturning what initially appears to be a clear victory for one candidate.

Mr Kyere-Duah’s remarks come amid heightened anticipation as the NPP prepares to select its presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections.
