Running mate debate heats up in NPP as Akwasi Nti warns Bawumia against dropping Napo

Tensions are rising within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as debate intensifies over the party’s running mate for the 2028 general elections, following a strong warning from Akwasi Nti to flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr. Nti, a political aide to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, cautioned Dr. Bawumia against considering any change to his running mate ahead of the next national polls.

The former Fomena constituency chairman said Dr. Bawumia “dares not” replace Napo, warning that loyalists would strongly resist such a decision.

In a viral video circulating across traditional and social media platforms, Mr. Nti was seen issuing a strongly worded caution during an interview.

“Let Dr Bawumia dare change Napo and he will see. How many times did Nana Akufo-Addo select him for him to dump Napo on first account? He will see,” he said, expressing visible anger.

The remarks have sparked heated discussions among party supporters and political observers, with some warning that the rhetoric could deepen internal tensions at a time when party leaders are calling for unity and strategic rebuilding.

Mr. Nti further indicated that he and other supporters of Dr. Opoku Prempeh would strongly oppose any attempt to replace the former running mate, insisting the decision would not be accepted quietly within party ranks.

The controversy is also linked to Mr. Nti’s role in the just-ended presidential primaries, where he served as a campaign coordinator for Kennedy Agyapong in the Adansi enclave and reportedly criticised Dr. Bawumia during the contest.

Political analysts say the situation could complicate reconciliation efforts within the NPP, especially as the party seeks to consolidate support after recent internal contests.

Although Dr. Bawumia has not publicly disclosed his running mate choice since his election as flagbearer, advocacy from groups aligned with Dr. Opoku Prempeh has intensified, with loyalists pushing for his re-nomination.

Observers warn that continued pressure and strong rhetoric risk damaging the party’s public image and could undermine efforts to project unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
