NPP Flagbearer Race: EC Dismisses Kennedy Agyapong Team’s Claims as Baseless Ahead of Polls
The Electoral Commission (EC) has strongly refuted allegations by the campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, which suggested irregularities in the transportation of ballot papers ahead of Saturday’s presidential primary.
Speaking on Top Story, the EC’s Deputy Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, rejected the claims outright, describing them as unfounded and misleading.
“There is no iota of truth in what has been circulated. That’s what I can say for now,” Mr. Tetteh stated on Friday, emphasizing that the Commission remains committed to a transparent and credible internal election.
The response follows a press statement issued by the Agyapong campaign team earlier in the day, urging the EC and the Ghana Police Service to heighten vigilance. The team claimed that, due to a shortage of official vehicles, the EC had resorted to using approved private vehicles to transport ballot papers. They also cited what they described as “isolated incidents” in three regions where ballots were allegedly moved without proper branding or police escort.
Despite the concerns raised, Mr. Tetteh assured the public and NPP delegates that all logistical and administrative arrangements for the primary had been completed.
“Everything is set for tomorrow. Everything is ready, all the officials are ready, and as I have been saying, the Commission will deliver a professional job tomorrow,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to upholding integrity, fairness, and transparency throughout the process.
“We will go into the elections, treat everything fairly, and undertake our responsibilities in light of integrity and in a transparent manner,” he added.
The NPP presidential primary is expected to be one of the most keenly contested internal elections in recent years, with delegates choosing a flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
