My Ayawaso East Bid Is About Service, Not Wealth - Baba Jamal
NDC parliamentary candidate Baba Jamal says his decision to contest the Ayawaso East by-election is driven by public service, not financial gain, insisting his diplomatic role offered far greater benefits than serving as an MP.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal Ahmed Mohammed, has stated that his decision to run for Parliament is rooted in a commitment to service rather than financial interest.
Addressing criticisms about his motives, Baba Jamal rejected suggestions that he is driven by greed or material gain. He maintained that his political ambition is focused on contributing to the growth and development of the constituency.
According to him, his history in public office demonstrates a consistent dedication to serving people instead of pursuing personal wealth.
The former High Commissioner to Nigeria noted that his diplomatic appointment came with significantly better financial benefits compared to what Members of Parliament receive. He argued that it would therefore be unreasonable to claim that monetary incentives are influencing his decision to contest the seat.
“My conditions of service as High Commissioner were about three times what an MP earns. Yet I chose to leave that and return home to serve. People should rather ask what truly motivates someone. I am motivated by service to humanity, not material things,” he said.
He further highlighted some of the benefits attached to his previous role, explaining that his allowances and earnings abroad exceeded what he would make as a legislator.
Baba Jamal urged constituents to assess him based on his experience, leadership record, and plans for the area instead of what he described as attempts by opponents to misrepresent his intentions.
He stated that his aim is to apply his background in governance, diplomacy, and administration to tackle key issues in Ayawaso East, including unemployment among the youth, infrastructure challenges, and broader social development concerns.
The NDC candidate also pledged inclusive and people-focused leadership, promising to collaborate with traditional authorities, youth groups, women, and other stakeholders to drive progress in the constituency if elected.
Baba Jamal is expected to submit his nomination forms at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission as part of preparations for the upcoming by-election.
