iNAIMOS ntensifies crackdown against illegal Mining Activities along the Birim River
On Monday 2 February 2026, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Taskforce deployed in the Eastern Region began to carry out audacious raids along the Birim River against activities of illegal miners which have caused massive pollution of the river. The taskforce had earlier in the day halted some reckless excavation of portions of the main road that connects Akyem Techiman.
Following that, the NAIMOS task force, later in the day, in a well coordinated simultaneous operation disrupted illegal mining activities along the Birim River whiles other team members reclaimed a dug pit about 10 meters to the road at Akyem Takyiman caused by illegal mining activities.
The operations along the Birim River were conducted jointly with the Denkyembour Blue Water Guards. The joint task force embarked on operations to flush out illegal miners who have been operating along and directly on the Birim River, striking specifically at Akim Wenchi, in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region. The illegal miners bolted on sighting the NAIMOS team at the various sites. The joint task force subsequently raided and destroyed through burning several illegal mining equipment including:
4 x dredging Chanfang platforms,
8 x Chanfangs and
2 x Gold washing platform.
The team also pulled out and destroyed several pipelines and water hoses that were linked to the Birim River and discharging mining residue directly into the River thereby causing its pollution. Additionally, 4 x Motorbikes that belonged to the illegal miners who fled the scene upon sighting the NAIMOS task force were seized.
The NAIMOS taskforce intends to sustain the current crackdown along the Birim River against the illegal miners. To this end, the Secretariat seeks the support of the local security and intelligence as well as administrative authorities to assist with information and other logistics to enable the team effectively achieve the set goal of a cleaned Birim River by the end of the raids.
