The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has apologised to President John Dramani Mahama for any past wrongs and called for a peaceful handover of power to the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the next election cycle.

In an exclusive interview with 1957 News, Wontumi explained that before Mahama became president, he was actively campaigning for the NPP and occasionally made statements against him in the course of promoting his party.

“If I meet Mahama, he is our president. At the time he was contesting, I had to work for my party. But now that he is president, what I would tell him is that just as Akufo-Addo handed over power peacefully to him, he should also hand over to Dr Bawumia,” Wontumi said.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining Ghana’s tradition of peaceful transitions, recalling that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo transferred power to Mahama without incident.

“Once we are human, sometimes we are not above asking for forgiveness. So if I have offended him, I am no bigger than to apologise. If I have done anything wrong, willingly or unwillingly, I will say I am sorry,” Wontumi added.

Separately, he announced his intention to contest for the NPP’s national chairmanship, stating that his goal is to strengthen the party and work towards winning the 2028 general elections.
