Chief Imam Hails Bawumia’s Victory as Affirmation of Ghana’s Democratic Identity
The National Chief Imam congratulates Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on winning the NPP presidential primary, calling it a reaffirmation of Ghana’s democratic and pluralistic identity.
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on his triumph in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary, describing it as a strong reflection of Ghana’s democratic and religiously pluralistic identity.
Dr Bawumia secured the NPP flagbearer position on Saturday, January 31, 2026, defeating four other aspirants in a closely contested race.
In a statement on Monday, February 2, the Chief Imam commended the party for conducting a peaceful congress and urged members to use the process as a reaffirmation of commitment to internal democracy, constitutional governance, and interfaith harmony.
He also praised the other contestants for conceding gracefully, highlighting their unity and political maturity as examples of respect for democratic norms.
Sheikh Sharubutu further acknowledged the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for their transparency, accountability, and objectivity in managing the primary, which he said enhanced the credibility of the process.
“Democracy is a shared responsibility and a civic duty. When we all fulfil our roles effectively, we will ultimately celebrate the comfort of our collective success rather than the discomfort of individual struggles,” he concluded.
