Akufo-Addo urges Prez Mahama administration to complete and operationalise Agenda 111 hospitals

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to the government led by John Dramani Mahama to give priority to finishing and activating the Agenda 111 hospital projects started during his time in office.

He made this call while speaking at the launch of the 100-year anniversary celebrations of the Kyebi Government Hospital, emphasising that access to quality healthcare should remain above political divisions. According to him, completing and making the Agenda 111 facilities fully functional would greatly enhance healthcare delivery across the country.

The Agenda 111 programme was introduced to construct 111 hospitals nationwide to help close gaps in access to medical services, especially in underserved communities.

The centenary celebration, organised by the Akyem Kyebi Government Hospital Authority together with the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, also served as a fundraising event to support infrastructure improvements at the hospital.

Addressing participants at the event, the former President stressed the importance of continuity in national development efforts and urged authorities to ensure the projects are completed rather than abandoned midway.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Isaac Adu-Opoku Antwi, outlined several longstanding challenges confronting the facility despite its century-long existence. He pointed to the lack of essential infrastructure such as a maternity block, a children’s ward, a physiotherapy unit, and staff accommodation.

He further explained that due to space constraints, children currently share wards with expectant mothers, a situation that affects the quality of care provided. Plans are therefore underway to construct additional wards as part of the hospital’s legacy projects to mark its centenary.

Also speaking at the event, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin called for a major upgrade of the hospital and encouraged stakeholders to support efforts to improve healthcare services in the area, stressing the urgent need for modernisation.

Agenda 111 remains a flagship initiative of the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party administration aimed at expanding healthcare access nationwide, although the programme has faced public criticism over delays in completion.
