Ablakwa Arrives in Latvia to Push for Justice in Death of Ghanaian Student

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official mission aimed at uncovering the truth behind the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.

In a Facebook update on Monday, the Minister said the visit fulfils a commitment he made to personally pursue answers regarding the unresolved and troubling circumstances surrounding the student’s passing while studying at Riga Technical University.

Mr Ablakwa revealed that he was warmly received by Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, and that the two officials have already held fruitful bilateral discussions.

He noted that Latvian authorities have pledged full cooperation to support investigations and ensure justice is served.

The Foreign Affairs Minister is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior ministry officials, a forensic specialist, and a pathologist. He explained that two relatives of the deceased were initially unable to travel due to visa delays but have since received clearance and are expected to join the team in Latvia.

Mr Ablakwa dismissed allegations circulating on social media claiming that the family was extorted or asked to pay for travel expenses, describing the claims as false and unsupported.

He stressed that all travel and investigative costs are fully covered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation is scheduled to engage with several Latvian institutions, including the Ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.

The visit follows an earlier statement by the Ministry denying accusations that it demanded money from the bereaved family to facilitate the trip, explaining that delays were solely due to visa processing issues and incomplete documentation.

Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Ghanaians abroad and ensuring justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia.
