Prez Mahama Announces New Runway Project to Upgrade Sunyani Airport for Commercial Flights
President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to build a new runway at Sunyani Airport to allow larger aircraft to operate and improve regional air travel.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing connectivity to the Bono Region while stimulating economic growth through improved transportation links.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the President highlighted the limitations of the current airport, noting that its runway is too short to accommodate jet aircraft.
He explained that the existing runway, which measures about 1.5 kilometres, prevents planes that typically land in Kumasi from operating in Sunyani.
Mahama said although there were initial considerations to extend the current runway, nearby infrastructure makes expansion difficult.
As a result, the government has opted to construct an entirely new runway. He added that local traditional leaders have already provided land for the project, and designs are in place for a 2.4-kilometre runway capable of handling larger aircraft.
The President indicated that the government will return at the appropriate time to officially commence construction with a sod-cutting ceremony.
