President Mahama to meet civil society groups on governance reforms and anti-corruption efforts

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to hold a high-level consultative meeting with civil society organisations at Jubilee House on Monday, March 30, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen accountability and advance institutional reform across the country.

The engagement will centre on strengthening transparency, improving public sector performance, tackling corruption, and encouraging greater citizen involvement in national development processes.

Key stakeholders expected at the meeting include representatives from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ghana, the Office of the National Chief Imam, and IMANI Ghana, among other civil society actors.

Civil society organisations say they intend to use the platform to push for firm government action on illegal mining, commonly referred to as *galamsey*, which continues to threaten water bodies and forests nationwide.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Awula Serwah of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey indicated the group would request clear timelines and concrete steps from government on several urgent concerns.

She said the coalition expects responses on issues such as the status of a District Chief Executive implicated in a recent exposé, the restoration of the diverted River Ankobra, the removal of illegal mining equipment from water bodies, provision of protective gear for the Forestry Commission, and the possible revocation of EI 144.

Awula Serwah warned that delays in addressing these matters could deepen the environmental crisis, stressing the need for immediate action and adequate logistical support for the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat to strengthen enforcement efforts.

The meeting is widely expected to provide an important opportunity for dialogue between government and civil society, amid increasing public pressure for decisive measures against illegal mining and broader governance reforms.
