President John Mahama Laments Traders’ Killings, Warns of Growing Regional Insecurity
President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Ghanaian tomato traders in northern Burkina Faso, describing the attack as a stark reminder of the worsening security situation across the subregion.
At least seven Ghanaian traders were killed in a terrorist attack on Saturday, February 14. Authorities in Burkina Faso buried the victims with the approval of the Government of Ghana after DNA samples were taken to ensure proper identification and notification of their families.
Speaking at the Ghana Tree Crop Investment Summit in Accra on Tuesday, February 17, President Mahama stressed the dangers faced by cross-border traders and warned that regional instability threatens economic cooperation and livelihoods.
“And unfortunately, we lost a number of our compatriots. Thankfully, there are a few survivors. The Ghana Army is arranging to medevac them from Burkina Faso so that those who are injured can continue to receive treatment here in Ghana.”
He extended condolences on behalf of the nation to the families of those killed and injured, pledging government support during this difficult period.
The President noted that the tragedy underscores the risks confronting traders who travel across borders to sustain local markets and called for strengthened regional security cooperation to protect citizens and trade routes.
