Police Foil Bribery Attempt, Seize Two Truckloads of Suspected Indian Hemp in Western Region
Police in the Western Region intercepted two truckloads of suspected Indian hemp at the Assokor barrier in Shama and arrested three suspects after rejecting a GH¢69,000 bribe attempt.
The Ghana Police Service in the Western Region has intercepted two truckloads of a substance believed to be Indian hemp at the Assokor barrier in the Shama Municipality.
The seizure occurred during routine inspections when officers stopped the vehicles for checks. A thorough search revealed large quantities of the suspected narcotic concealed in the trucks.
According to the Western Regional Police Command’s Head of Public Affairs, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, the first truck was intercepted at the Shama Police barrier at Asokwe. Three individuals initially fled the scene, but officers managed to arrest one suspect, who later led them to a second vehicle parked at Nkrofo Junction.
In total, three suspects have been arrested in connection with the operation.
Police also disclosed that two of the suspects returned with GH¢69,000 in an attempt to bribe officers to secure the release of their accomplice. The officers rejected the offer and immediately arrested the suspects involved in the bribery attempt.
A subsequent offloading of the trucks uncovered approximately 152 large bales of the suspected substance. Each bale reportedly contained about 82 compressed parcels wrapped in yellow packaging.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to determine the source and intended destination of the narcotics.
