Parliament Gives Green Light to 24-Hour Economy Authority Law

Parliament has officially endorsed the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, paving the way for the rollout of a major economic initiative under President John Mahama’s government.

The approval followed days of extensive discussions in the House, with lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority sides sharing their views. The bill was originally laid before Parliament late in 2025.

The new law aims to shift Ghana’s economy into a round-the-clock operating model. It establishes a dedicated 24-Hour Economy Authority to oversee and coordinate the implementation of the policy nationwide.

This Authority will work to harmonise efforts between the public and private sectors, encourage investment, and ensure that the necessary legal, regulatory, and infrastructure systems are in place to sustain continuous business activities.

The 24-hour economy concept was a key campaign pledge of the National Democratic Congress during the 2024 elections. The government believes the initiative will enhance productivity, generate employment opportunities, and drive faster economic development.

Despite broad support, the bill attracted some reservations during debates. The Minority caucus warned that without proper planning, a nonstop economy could pose security challenges and disrupt everyday life.

However, the Majority caucus defended the proposal, arguing that its long-term benefits far exceed the risks. They assured Parliament that strong security measures and regulatory controls would be implemented alongside the policy.

Now that the bill has been passed, the government is set to establish the 24-Hour Economy Authority and commence the steps needed to operationalise the policy across the country.
