NPP delegates rejected tribalism and religious intolerance with my victory - Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says his victory in the party’s January 31 presidential primary demonstrates the party’s rejection of tribalism and religious bigotry.

Speaking at an Islamic thanksgiving and prayer service at the National Mosque on Friday, February 13, Dr. Bawumia said he deliberately refrained from responding to what he described as false and ethnocentric attacks during the campaign, drawing guidance from the Qur’an.

According to him, his competence, experience, and track record ultimately earned him re-election as the NPP’s presidential candidate.

“Quran 41:34 tells us, and I quote, ‘Repel evil with what is better.’ Furthermore, we should leave the ultimate judgment to God. It is in accordance with His teachings that I chose not to respond to all the lies and insults,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia said his decisive win at the primaries affirmed that the NPP prioritises merit over identity politics.

“I was overjoyed with the overwhelming nature of the victory because it showed very clearly that the NPP is not a tribal party and also not a religiously bigoted party. The delegates demonstrated that our party votes on the basis of competence, capability, vision, character, humility, integrity, and tolerance—not on the basis of tribe or religion,” he added.

He also expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the upcoming general election and urged party members and leaders to remain united and work hard toward securing victory.
