Ghana Tertiary Education Council Closes Royal Nursing College, Leaving Over 800 Students Affected
GTEC has shut down Royal Nursing College in Tafo Nyhiaeso for lacking accreditation, leaving over 800 students affected and prompting plans for transfers to accredited institutions.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) has ordered the shutdown of Royal Nursing College located at Tafo Nyhiaeso in the Ashanti Region after the school’s management allegedly failed to provide documentation confirming its accreditation status.
GTEC stated that the college does not hold accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and ignored a June 2024 directive instructing it to stop admitting new students.
The institution, which reportedly enrolls more than 800 students, is believed to have been operating without proper registration with the relevant regulatory authorities, raising concerns about programme administration and academic standards.
Officials from GTEC inspected the campus on Thursday, February 19, and after an hour-long evaluation announced the immediate closure, stressing that the action was necessary to safeguard students and uphold educational regulations.
The Council indicated that arrangements would be made to transfer affected students to accredited institutions, while special provisions are expected to allow final-year students to complete their studies.
The decision triggered shock and distress among students, with many seen in tears on campus. Some expressed frustration after recently paying tuition fees, lamenting the sudden interruption to their education.
Meanwhile, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department accompanied GTEC officials to the school and picked up the wife of the owner along with some members of management for questioning.
