Ghana Could Supply Steel Across West Africa with Strong Local Industry - President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that Ghana could supply steel to the entire West African sub-region if the country succeeds in developing a strong and competitive domestic steel industry.

Speaking at the commissioning of the B5 Plus Limited steel manufacturing plant at Prampram on Friday, February 20, he outlined a vision to position Ghana as a regional hub for steel production.

The President said Ghana is intentionally moving up the industrial value chain by exporting finished and semi-finished products instead of raw scrap metal.

He linked the expansion of the steel sector to the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, which includes major investments in roads, railways, bridges, energy transmission, affordable housing, and industrial parks. According to him, these projects require large volumes of iron and steel.

Mahama noted that Africa’s infrastructure needs exceed $100 billion annually, with West Africa facing a significant deficit. He said Ghana stands to benefit economically if it develops the capacity to meet both domestic and regional steel demand.

He emphasised that building a strong steel base would enable Ghana not only to construct its own infrastructure but also to export steel across the sub-region, turning infrastructure development into a driver of industrial growth.

The President also highlighted the role of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative in supporting energy-intensive industries such as steel manufacturing. He revealed that the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill is central to boosting industrial productivity and indicated that B5 Plus Group is expected to be among the first companies to enrol in the programme.

He explained that continuous production improves efficiency, reduces energy waste, lowers unit costs, and maximises equipment use. With dedicated industrial tariffs, improved power reliability, and expanding domestic gas supply, he said Ghanaian manufacturers could operate competitively beyond traditional working hours.

Mahama disclosed that $110 million has been allocated in the 2026 budget to operationalise the 24-hour economy initiative, underscoring the government’s commitment to industrial transformation. He added that round-the-clock factory operations would increase employment, boost productivity, and expand exports.

According to the President, a thriving steel industry supported by infrastructure investment and continuous production will strengthen Ghana’s economy and position the country as a major industrial supplier within West Africa.
