Extradition Proceedings Begin in U.S. Against Ken Ofori-Atta

Extradition proceedings have begun in the United States against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, according to disclosures made in court by the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Thursday, February 26.

Prosecutors informed the court that two separate legal actions have been initiated in the U.S. involving the former minister. The first, which commenced in January 2026, relates to alleged immigration violations. The second concerns Ghana’s formal extradition request seeking his return to face trial.

The Republic also stated that Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has notified the Attorney-General that the United States Department of Justice has acknowledged receipt of the extradition package. Relevant legal documents, including the charge sheet and summons, have been transmitted to U.S. authorities.

According to prosecutors, Ghana is awaiting the outcomes of both the immigration matter and the extradition proceedings before indicating when Ofori-Atta may be available to appear before the court.

The OSP further reminded the court that permission had earlier been obtained to serve summons on Ofori-Atta and co-accused Ernest Darko Akore, both of whom are subjects of extradition requests filed on November 19, 2025.

Charges amended; pleas retaken

Prosecution also disclosed that the charge sheet in the broader case has been amended. While the substance of the allegations remains unchanged, corrections reduced the total counts from 78 to 75.

As a result, affected accused persons were required to retake their pleas in court, with all entering not guilty pleas. Two additional witness statements have also been filed.

The case has been adjourned to March 26, 2026.
