Driver Negligence Causing Accidents, Not Toyota Voxy Vehicles – GPRTU
GPRTU says driver negligence, not Toyota Voxy vehicles, is responsible for recent road accidents, opposing NRSA’s proposed ban on the vehicles.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has opposed the decision by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial transport, describing the move as misguided.
According to the Union, the decision was taken without sufficient consultation with key stakeholders in the transport sector and does not address the underlying causes of road accidents.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News on April 10, Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU, Abass Imoro, attributed recent crashes involving Voxy vehicles to driver negligence rather than faults with the vehicles themselves.
He argued that reckless driving particularly over-speeding is the primary cause of such incidents, noting that many drivers exceed approved speed limits on Ghana’s roads. He added that some Voxy drivers travel at extremely high speeds, despite the absence of roads permitting such velocity.
Mr. Imoro also pointed to lapses in enforcement, stating that some officers responsible for monitoring over-speeding are not effectively carrying out their duties.
He maintained that banning the vehicles would not resolve broader road safety challenges and called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved driver discipline instead.
Meanwhile, the NRSA has defended its directive, explaining that many Toyota Voxy vehicles currently being used for commercial transport are operating illegally. The Authority cited regulatory breaches and safety concerns, noting that several of the vehicles are right-hand-drive and do not meet legal requirements for commercial use on Ghana’s roads.
