Bawumia’s Win Has Reshaped Ghana’s Political Landscape – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, says Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s election as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has altered Ghana’s political dynamics.

According to him, this is the first time in the country’s history that an opposition party has chosen its presidential candidate nearly three years ahead of a general election.

In a post on X, Anyidoho noted that Dr Bawumia, who served as Vice President for eight years, only conceded defeat in the 2024 elections but has now emerged victorious within his party.

He congratulated Dr Bawumia and the NPP, expressing hope that Ghana’s democracy will continue to grow stronger.

Dr Bawumia secured a decisive victory in the January 31, 2026 flagbearer race with over 56 percent of the total votes cast. His closest rival, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second, followed by Bryan Acheampong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

This marks the second time Dr Bawumia will lead the NPP into a presidential election, having previously contested and lost in 2024.

Political analysts remain divided on what his early endorsement means for the 2028 elections. While some believe his prior exposure strengthens the NPP’s chances, others argue that electoral success will depend more on party organisation and public trust than on individual candidates.

The flagbearer election was largely peaceful, aside from a minor disturbance reported in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
