Anti-LGBTQ Bill Remains a Priority – Sam George
Communications Minister Sam George insists the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill remains a national priority despite calls to focus on other issues.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has reaffirmed that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill remains a key national priority despite ongoing debate about government priorities.
The Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament maintained that critics who argue the country should focus solely on economic and social challenges underestimate the seriousness of issues the bill seeks to address.
His comments follow remarks by John Dramani Mahama, who during a March 30 meeting with civil society organisations at the Jubilee House indicated that although the bill is important, it is not among Ghana’s most urgent challenges. The President highlighted pressing concerns such as education, healthcare, employment, food security, and shelter.
The statement sparked public debate, with religious groups and other stakeholders questioning what they viewed as inconsistencies in the government’s stance on the proposed legislation.
Responding to the backlash, Mr. George defended continued efforts to pass the bill, arguing that issues related to family values and child protection remain central to its purpose. He cited a recent case he said demonstrated the relevance of the legislation and emphasised that Ghana can address multiple national priorities simultaneously.
He stressed that prioritising the bill does not mean abandoning development efforts in other sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and water supply.
Mr. George further stated that his electoral mandate from constituents in Ningo-Prampram reflects strong support for his position, noting that his increased vote margin was partly due to his advocacy for the legislation.
He concluded that addressing family values, alongside development projects, remains a priority for him and his constituents, insisting the bill will continue to receive attention.
