AMA to Double Street Sweepers’ Pay to GH₵800 to Boost Youth Employment
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced plans to increase street sweepers’ monthly allowance from GH₵400 to GH₵800, a move aimed at attracting more youth into sanitation work and reducing unemployment.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to double the monthly allowance paid to street sweepers, increasing it from GH₵400 to GH₵800.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Accra Mayor Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey said the decision is part of efforts to attract more young people into the sanitation sector while helping to reduce unemployment in the capital.
According to the Mayor, fair remuneration is key to improving productivity and motivating workers to give off their best.
“When you are a leader and you want people to work well, you need to make sure the salaries they take home are fair,” Mr Allotey said.
He credited President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy policy for enabling the AMA to operate around the clock, creating room for expanded sanitation services and job opportunities.
“I am telling them that we are increasing their salary from GH₵400 to GH₵800. That will bring in more youth. I think it is a good thing, and I hope my colleagues do the same to reduce unemployment,” he added.
The Mayor also called on other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country to consider similar measures to strengthen sanitation delivery and address rising unemployment, especially among the youth.
