Akufo-Addo Appointed to Lead ECOWAS Observer Mission for Benin’s 2026 Presidential Elections

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the ECOWAS as Head of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential election in the Benin, scheduled for April 12, 2026.

The appointment was formally announced by the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission, underscoring the bloc’s continued commitment to strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and safeguarding stability across West Africa.

According to a statement shared on Facebook on Friday, March 27, the mission will be deployed from April 7 to April 15, 2026. Its operations will be guided by the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which sets the regulatory framework for election observer missions in the region.

Benin Prepares for a Post-Talon Era

The election marks a significant moment in Benin’s political history as President Patrice Talon, in office since 2016, is stepping down after completing his second and final term. He will not seek re-election.

Two major contenders have emerged for the presidency:

Romuald Wadagni, backed by the ruling coalition and widely regarded as the frontrunner.
Paul Hounkpè, running on the ticket of the opposition.

Benin’s electoral system operates on a two-round model: if no candidate secures more than 50% of the valid votes in the first round, a runoff will be held within 15 days.

ECOWAS Deepens Regional Democratic Support

Akufo-Addo’s selection is seen as a strategic move by ECOWAS, considering his experience as a former head of state and his role in past regional mediation efforts. His leadership is expected to help ensure transparency, credibility, and peaceful conduct of the polls.
