Afenyo-Markin Credits Bawumia for Gold-for-Reserve Policy, Urges Recognition
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin praises former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the originator of Ghana’s Gold-for-Reserve policy, urging the government to acknowledge his contribution.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has asserted that former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia deserves full credit for the Gold-for-Reserve policy now being implemented by the Mahama administration.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s 2026 State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the positive economic outcomes of the policy but highlighted that the intellectual ownership belongs to Bawumia.
"The president is telling us today that some gains have been made... through this Gold-For-Reserve policy," Afenyo-Markin said.
He added,
"Mr. Speaker, the Gold-For-Reserve policy, what they have failed to tell Ghanaians, is that the Bawumia that they attacked is the brainchild of this policy."
Drawing on a local proverb, the Minority Leader urged the government to acknowledge contributions across the political divide.
"Mr. Speaker, I would want to urge the government: give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia."
The comments come amid broader discussions on Ghana’s economic recovery and efforts to strengthen the country’s foreign reserves through gold purchases, a measure credited with bolstering the cedi and supporting fiscal stability.
