World Bank’s $22.6m Facility to Strengthen Ghana’s Food Security – Ato Forson
Ghana’s Finance Minister says World Bank funding under the Food System Resilience Project will enhance farming productivity and national food security.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that a US$22.6 million World Bank-supported loan under the West Africa Food System Resilience Project (FSRP) will help transform Ghana’s agricultural sector and improve national food security.
Dr. Forson made the disclosure during a working visit to Golden Exotics Limited, a major banana producer and exporter, along with rice farming communities in Kpong and Asutsuare across the Eastern and Greater Accra regions.
The initiative, implemented by the Government of Ghana with World Bank backing, focuses on improving farmers’ access to digital climate and weather advisory services. It also targets increased production of staple commodities such as maize, rice, soybean, tomato, and poultry to enhance productivity and resilience within the food system.
According to the Finance Minister, the facility will help resolve long-standing structural issues that have hindered growth in the agricultural sector.
“This support from the World Bank is crucial for revitalising agriculture, a sector that has faced many challenges over the years. The funding will significantly boost productivity and food security,” Dr. Forson said.
Also speaking, the World Bank’s Division Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Robert Taliercio, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to Ghana’s development agenda.
He stressed that agriculture remains a major contributor to the country’s GDP and employment, adding that continued investment especially in infrastructure is essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential.
