Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Engages Roads Ministry on National Infrastructure, Calls for Patience and Contractor Support

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has paid an official working visit to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, engaging Sector Minister Kwame Agbodza and the Ministry’s leadership on the current state of Ghana’s road infrastructure and ongoing national development efforts.

The visit provided a platform for government and the Ministry to align strategies, review progress, and address gaps in communication as the country accelerates its infrastructure drive under the “Big Push” agenda.

137,000km Road Network Reviewed

During the briefing, the Ministry outlined the scope of Ghana’s road network—now approximately 137,000 kilometres—and highlighted Government’s renewed commitment to upgrading and expanding road infrastructure across all regions.

A key focus area was the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, a major project expected to significantly enhance mobility, boost trade, and strengthen economic activity between two of the country’s busiest urban centres.

Maintenance, Tolling & Axle-Load Enforcement Prioritised

The Ministry also updated the Vice President on improved measures to ensure road durability, including intensified axle-load enforcement to curb heavy vehicle damage.

Additionally, officials revealed plans to introduce technology-driven tolling systems following Cabinet’s approval to reintroduce road tolls—aimed at ensuring efficiency, transparency, and improved revenue mobilisation for maintenance.

Challenges Persist

Despite progress, the Ministry highlighted several obstacles affecting project execution. These include:

• High sector indebtedness
• Limited financing and budget constraints
• Project delays
• Inadequate staff capacity
• Vandalism of road infrastructure
• Right-of-way issues that hinder timely construction

The Vice President acknowledged these challenges and assured the Ministry of Government’s support in addressing them.

Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Public Patience & Contractor Responsibility

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang emphasised that road development is crucial to national progress and economic transformation. She urged the public to remain patient as Government steadily confronts the sector’s challenges.

She also encouraged Ghanaian contractors to demonstrate greater commitment, adhere to high-quality standards, and actively support the delivery of key infrastructure under the Big Push programme.
