Lincoln University Withdraws Honorary Degree for prez John Mahama Amid LGBTQ Bill Concerns
Ghana’s Embassy in the United States has expressed strong disappointment following a last-minute decision by Lincoln University to withdraw the planned conferment of an honorary doctorate degree, honoris causa, on President John Dramani Mahama.
According to the Embassy, the decision was communicated only hours before the President’s scheduled visit on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The withdrawal was reportedly influenced by concerns raised by a group within the university community regarding President Mahama’s perceived position on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-gay Bill currently before Parliament.
The Embassy indicated that these concerns were not raised during earlier engagement and due diligence processes between the university and Ghanaian officials. It noted that both parties had completed a full walkthrough just a week earlier and finalized logistical and programme arrangements ahead of the visit.
“It is both surprising and regrettable that such concerns have surfaced at this late stage, particularly with the President already in the United States in anticipation of the visit,” the Embassy said in a statement.
Officials further emphasized that President Mahama accepted the invitation in good faith from an institution that shares longstanding historical ties with Ghana, including its association with Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, who studied at the university.
While acknowledging the university’s right to engage internal stakeholders and uphold its institutional values, the Embassy expressed concern that the issues cited relate to an ongoing legislative process in Ghana and do not represent the unilateral position of any individual.
The Embassy also highlighted President Mahama’s record of leadership rooted in democratic governance, respect for human rights, and inclusive dialogue on complex national issues. It described the timing of the decision as unfortunate, particularly given the advanced stage of preparations and the absence of earlier engagement on the concerns raised.
Despite the setback, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and mutual respect, expressing hope that the historic relationship between Ghana and Lincoln University will continue to guide future cooperation between the two sides.
