Ghana Card Holders in Canada Can Travel Home Without Visa – NIA
The NIA says Ghanaians in Canada holding the Ghana Card can travel home without acquiring a visa, as discussions continue to expand international recognition of the card.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has outlined international benefits of the Ghana Card, including simplified travel arrangements for Ghanaians living abroad and improved identity verification overseas.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 10, Director of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, said the Authority is engaging foreign embassies to expand global acceptance of the Ghana Card.
He explained that discussions with diplomatic missions aim to encourage the inclusion of the Ghana Card in visa application processes, while acknowledging that visa policies remain under the authority of individual countries.
“We are still having conversations with embassies. These are states on their own, so you cannot force them unless through civil engagement,” he stated, adding that early feedback from engagements has been encouraging.
Mr Darlas further noted that Ghanaian diaspora communities already benefit from simplified travel arrangements, particularly those travelling from Canada.
According to him, Ghanaians in Canada who hold the Ghana Card can travel to Ghana without first obtaining a Ghanaian visa. He explained that travellers only need their Ghana Card to book a ticket and fly home.
He added that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to position the Ghana Card as a globally recognised identity document that supports mobility and administrative efficiency for citizens living abroad.
