OSP Commends President Mahama for Halting Bill to Abolish Office
The OSP praises President John Dramani Mahama for halting a Private Member’s Bill that sought to repeal the Office, reinforcing its role as an independent anti-corruption agency.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his swift intervention in calling for the withdrawal of a Private Member’s Bill that sought to repeal the Office and transfer its powers to the Attorney-General.
The bill, introduced on December 8, 2025, by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, argued that operational challenges, duplication of functions, and high costs justified the abolition of the OSP.
In its Half-Yearly Report for December 2025, the OSP described these reasons as unfair and not reflective of its performance and impact since its establishment in 2018. The office commended the President’s action, stating that it “reinforced the wisdom of establishing the Office as an independent anti-corruption agency separate from the Attorney-General.”
“The Office highly commends the President – and the nation has His Excellency to thank – for the swift and decisive call for the withdrawal of the bill,” the report added.
President Mahama, speaking at a meeting with the National Peace Council, said the proposal to scrap the OSP was premature and urged the Office to accelerate its work to strengthen public confidence in anti-corruption efforts.
