68% of Ghanaians approve of President Mahama’s performance – IEA poll
A nationwide opinion poll by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has found that 68% of Ghanaians approve of President John Dramani Mahama’s performance one year after returning to office.
The survey, conducted in December 2025 and involving more than 1,000 respondents across all regions, showed that 22% disapprove of the President’s performance, while 10% expressed no opinion.
In a press release dated February 11, 2026, the IEA said the high approval rating indicates that President Mahama continues to enjoy strong public backing despite prevailing economic pressures.
“Public support for President John Mahama is high, with a 68% job approval rating,” the report noted.
However, the poll also revealed widespread concern about the rising cost of living. About 71% of respondents said they were very concerned about increasing prices of food and consumer goods, while another 20% said they were somewhat concerned—bringing total concern levels to 91%.
Unemployment emerged as the most pressing national issue, cited by 46% of respondents. Illegal mining (galamsey) followed at 30%, while corruption and the general state of the economy were identified by 9% and 8% respectively as the country’s most urgent problems.
President Mahama assumed office on January 7, 2025, amid high expectations following a difficult economic period marked by debt pressures, inflation, currency depreciation and joblessness.
The IEA noted that although some economic indicators are showing signs of improvement, significant socioeconomic challenges remain.
The institute concluded that while Ghanaians remain hopeful about the President’s leadership, many are still grappling with economic hardships and expect more decisive action to address unemployment, rising prices and structural challenges in the economy.
