LGBTQ+ Debate Not Among Top Priorities for Ghanaians – Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, has said matters relating to LGBTQ+ rights are not among the key priorities for most Ghanaians, stressing that the government remains focused on pressing socio-economic challenges.

Speaking on The Pulse on April 7, 2026, Kwakye Ofosu argued that the topic does not rank highly among the concerns of ordinary citizens and should not dominate national conversations.

He suggested that political opponents, including the New Patriotic Party, often raise the issue in ways that divert attention from more urgent matters affecting people’s daily lives.

According to him, many Ghanaians are primarily concerned with earning a living, securing employment, and meeting basic needs, making the debate less relevant to their immediate circumstances.

The Minister maintained that government priorities remain aligned with citizens’ welfare, highlighting areas such as job creation, education, healthcare, food security, and access to water as the focus of policy attention.

He also referenced the stance of the government leadership, noting that while external actors may continue to advocate for action on LGBTQ+ matters, Ghana’s agenda should centre on issues that directly affect livelihoods.

Kwakye Ofosu further criticised the emphasis placed on the subject by some political actors, arguing that it does not reflect the most pressing needs of the population.

He concluded that there was no basis for calls demanding an apology over the President’s remarks, insisting that attention should remain on policies aimed at improving the living conditions of Ghanaians.
