Ahiagbah Demands Clarity on Potential Fuel Price Increases Amid Middle East Tensions

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah, has called on the government to provide clear information on whether the ongoing tensions in the Middle East could lead to an increase in fuel prices in Ghana.

Speaking on the KeyPoints programme on March 7, Ahiagbah stressed that authorities must openly address the issue to avoid uncertainty among Ghanaians about possible hikes at the fuel pumps.

According to him, the absence of clear communication may create the impression that the conflict will inevitably push petroleum prices higher in the country.

He explained that global conflicts have previously had significant effects on Ghana’s fuel prices, referencing the economic consequences of the Russia–Ukraine War.

Ahiagbah noted that the war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, despite occurring far from Ghana, contributed to higher fuel costs and increased living expenses for many citizens.

He also pointed out that Ghana currently benefits from some level of local refining capacity, which can supply roughly 30 percent of the nation’s fuel demand.

To reduce the potential burden on the public, Ahiagbah urged the government to explore measures such as tax relief and other interventions to help protect consumers and farmers from possible increases in fuel and food prices.
